DONATION OF A TRIAGE AREA FOR THE PEDIATRIC RESPIRATORY WARD, APEKSHA HOSPITAL
Enhancing Pediatric Care with a New Triage Area at Apeksha Hospital, Maharagama, Sri Lanka.
The Lions Club of Colombo LEADS has taken a significant step towards enhancing the healthcare services at Apeksha Hospital, Maharagama by constructing a dedicated Triage Area for the Pediatric Respiratory Ward. This new facility, equipped with various amenities and designed with both functionality and comfort in mind, aims to provide a better environment for young patients and their families. The Triage Area includes essential features such as seating, a TV set, water facilities, a charging station, free Wi-Fi, and computers for the Tele Triage System, making it a comprehensive addition to the hospital’s infrastructure. Completed on 28th March 2021, the project involved meticulous planning, construction, and handover to the hospital within the requested period.

Opening

1 — TO WHOM THIS PROJECT
The Triage Area project was dedicated to the Pediatric Respiratory Ward of Apeksha Hospital Maharagama. This initiative was undertaken to enhance the hospital’s capacity by providing a dedicated waiting area. Presently, patients are forced to wait under trees and in open spaces, leaving them vulnerable to adverse weather conditions.
2 — PLANNING & MAKING STEEL STRUCTURE
In the initial phase, detailed planning was conducted to ensure the Triage Area met all necessary requirements. A robust steel structure was designed and constructed, providing a solid foundation for the new facility.
3 — FLOOR PREPARATION
The next step involved preparing the floor. The ground was leveled and a concrete floor was laid, ensuring durability and stability for the area.
4 — FINISHING MASONRY WORKS & STEEL STRUCTURE, FIXING CLADDING
After the floor preparation, masonry works and steel structure finishing were carried out. The cladding was fixed to the structure, providing both aesthetic appeal and additional protection.
5 — FIXING CANOPY
A canopy was installed to provide shelter and shade for the Triage Area. This addition helps protect patients and staff from the elements while they wait or work.
6 — FIXING LIGHTS & FANS
To ensure the area was well-lit and ventilated, lights and fans were installed. This step was crucial for creating a comfortable and functional environment.
7 — FINISHING FLOOR & FIXING FLOOR CARPET
The concrete floor was then finished and covered with a carpet, enhancing the overall look and feel of the Triage Area and making it more comfortable for the patients and visitors.
8 — OUTSIDE ARTWORK
The exterior of the Triage Area was decorated with attractive artworks. These visuals were designed to create a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere for children and their families.
9 — INSIDE ARTWORK
The interior walls of the Triage Area were also painted with colorful and engaging artworks, contributing to a child-friendly environment that can help alleviate stress and anxiety for young patients.
10 — INSTALLED RELEVANT EQUIPMENT
The Triage Area was equipped with various facilities, including:
- 20 seating arrangements in a 20′ x 10′ area.
- A TV set with Dialogue TV connection.
- Hot and cool water facilities.
- A charging station for mobile phones and tablets.
- Free Wi-Fi.
- A lighting system.
- Two fans.
- 10 personal computers for the Tele Triage System.
11 — OPENING CEREMONY
The Triage Area was officially opened in a ceremony attended by hospital staff, members of the Lions Club of Colombo LEADS, and other distinguished guests.
12 — SPEECH BY DR. LALITH PODDALGODA
Dr. Lalith Poddalgoda highlighted the importance of the Triage Area, emphasizing how it will significantly improve the hospital’s ability to manage pediatric respiratory cases efficiently.

Dr. Thushari Hapuarachchi expressed her gratitude to the Lions Club of Colombo LEADS for their generous contribution. She noted that the new Triage Area would enhance the patient experience and support the hospital’s mission to provide high-quality care.
